A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
Q: You have said through the start that The Hunger Games story was intended as being a trilogy. Did it actually end the best way you planned it through the beginning?

A: Very much so. While I didn't know every detail, of course, the arc in the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, towards the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process.

Q: We understand you worked around the initial screenplay for the film to be based on The Hunger Games. What may be the biggest distinction between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?

A: There are several significant differences. Time, for starters. If you are adapting a novel into a two-hour movie you simply can't take everything with you. The story has to be condensed to suit the modern form. Then there is the question of how best to look at a book told inside first person and offer tense and transform it right into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you won't ever leave Katniss for the second and so are privy to all of her thoughts so you need a strategy to dramatize her inner world and to generate it easy for other characters to exist beyond her company. Finally, you have the challenge of the way to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating so that your core audience can view it. A great deal of situations are acceptable on a page that may not be on the screen. But wait, how certain moments are depicted may ultimately be within the director's hands.

Q: Are you currently capable to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed inside world you are currently creating so fully who's is too challenging to consider new ideas?

A: We have a couple of seeds of ideas going swimming during my head but--given a good deal of of my focus is still on The Hunger Games--it will likely be awhile before one fully emerges and that i can begin to develop it.

Q: The Hunger Games is a yearly televised event in which one boy then one girl from each in the twelve districts is forced to participate in a very fight-to-the-death on live TV. What do you think the selling point of reality television is--to both kids and adults?

A: Well, they're often create as games and, like sporting events, there's an curiosity about seeing who wins. The contestants are often unknown, which means they are relatable. Sometimes they've very talented people performing. Then you have the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or delivered to tears, or suffering physically--which I have found very disturbing. There's also the potential for desensitizing the audience, in order that whenever they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, this doesn't happen hold the impact it should.

Q: In the wedding you were expected to compete within the Hunger Games, so what can you think that your special skill would be?

A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I became trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope can be to have hold of a rapier if there was clearly one available. But reality is I'd probably get about a four in Training.

Q: What can you hope readers should come away with whenever they read The Hunger Games trilogy?

A: Questions about how elements with the books could possibly be relevant in their own lives. And, if they are disturbing, whatever they might do about them.

Gr 7 Up–The final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss a single more Hunger Game, but on this occasion it's for world control. While it is often a clever twist for the original plot, it indicates that there's less focus on the individual characters and much more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick will continue to breathe life right into a less vibrant Katniss by showing her despair both at those she feels responsible for killing and possibly at her very own motives and choices. This is an older, wiser, sadder, and very reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn from the rebels and the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to try and control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are very evidenced in the voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement to a unsure return to sweetness. McCormick also helps make the secondary characters—some malevolent, others benevolent, and lots of confused—very real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts like an outside chronicler in giving listeners just “the facts” but in addition respects the individuality and different challenges of every from the main characters. If there really are just seven original plots within the world, it's odd that boy meets girl is definitely mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the nice guy never is. Yet we have Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Your Home from the Scorpion—and now, following a lengthy tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future with a specific date, or weighted it down with an excessive amount of finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers can be a gripping story set inside a postapocalyptic world when a replacement to the Usa demands a tribute from each of the territories: two children to become used as gladiators in the televised fight for the death.Katniss, from the undeniable fact that was once Appalachia, offers to adopt the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely dedicated to survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the significance of holding on one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a new Theseus, is cold, calculating yet still likable. She gets the attributes to be a winner, where Peeta has the grace being an excellent loser.It's no accident why these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. the State of Panem—which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and its citizens complacent—may have come up with Games, but mindless television is the real danger, the means in which society pacifies its citizens and punishes people that neglect to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, celebrate this the proper book with the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be enthusiastic about grooming, we'll talk funny, and many types of our sentences can finish while using same rise as questions. When Katniss is shipped to stylists to become made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked in front of them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that we're no longer self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures who're sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It is not exactly the contestants who risk the loss of their humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not exactly the Games though the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this really is the first book in the series, not it is all totally resolved, and what is left unanswered could be the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We know very well what she's got given up to survive, and not perhaps the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to learn more.

She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son from the town baker who seems to own all the fighting skills of your lump of bread dough, will likely be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives that have trained with this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will surely resonate with all the generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.' In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to discover herself more the middle of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her which has a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets together with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is split into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for that 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version with the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the world of Panem: its power structure, rumors of the secret district, plus a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens being a character. Though initially bewildered from the interest to her, she comes almost to embrace her status since the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more in the story takes place away from arena than within, this sequel has enough action to thrill Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to become desperate for the next installment.

Reviewers were very happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all sorts of looked forward for the third book in the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as effective as the original book Hunger Games or ought to be viewed as somewhat of the "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire used to be a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a way that will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.
